Staying Connected with Your Teen® Research and Development

Research

One of the hallmarks of our prevention science programs is that they are grounded on rigorous research from a variety of disciplines. The primary areas of research that form the foundation are:

  • a comprehensive, community-wide approach
  • demonstrated predictors of problem behaviors and positive youth outcomes -- what are more commonly referred to as risk and protective factors
  • tested, effective programs, policies, and practices.

For over 25 years, Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Catalano, professors of social work at the University of Washington and directors of the Social Development Research Group, have been at the forefront of prevention science theory and application. Internationally known for their research in positive youth development and crime, violence, and substance abuse prevention, they founded Developmental Research & Programs, Inc., in 1984 to translate research findings into programs and services for promoting healthy development among young people and families.

In 2000, Hawkins and Catalano joined with Channing Bete Company to develop and deliver research-based,
results-oriented programs and tools to help young people make healthy choices and fulfill their potential.
