*In 1999, the Penn State Prevention Research Center was awarded a Head Start-University Partnership Grant (grant #90YD0063) by the Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services, to work with Head Start administrative and teaching staff to implement the PATHS Preschool curriculum and evaluate its effectiveness in a randomized trial. During the 2000-2001 school year, 20 Head Start classrooms participated in the evaluation. Half of the teachers used the PATHS Preschool curriculum and half continued to conduct their classes as usual, following Head Start standards. A total of 246 children were evaluated at the beginning and end of the school year. Teachers and parents were asked to complete ratings on the children at both time points. The measures included assessments by both teachers and parents regarding children's behavior, as well as interviews with children regarding emotional knowledge.

In a published report of that randomized clinical trial, students exposed to PATHS Preschool scored significantly higher on standardized tests of emotional and social competence than did their unexposed peers. In addition, teachers and parents evaluated the exposed children as more socially competent compared to peers, with teachers also finding these children less socially withdrawn at the end of the school year compared to controls.
