Success in Stages® Programs
Now Listed in OJJDP's Model Programs Guide
Guide cites "significant treatment effects" in middle and high schools

South Deerfield, MA -- The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), the component of the U.S. Department of Justice that provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization, recently recognized the effectiveness of the Success in Stages® bullying programs for middle and high school students, and has listed the programs in its Model Programs Guide.

Found at http://www.dsgonline.com/mpg2.5/mpg_index.htm, the OJJDP Model Programs Guide is an online database used by communities that are looking to find and implement evidence-based prevention and intervention programs. Covering the entire continuum of youth services, the database can be used to assist juvenile justice practitioners, administrators, and researchers to enhance accountability, ensure public safety, and reduce recidivism. It is the first and only database of scientifically proven programs that covers the full spectrum of youth services.

The Model Programs Guide states that the Success in Stages programs "significantly reduced the percentage of students in middle schools and high schools who participated in bullying." National effectiveness trials completed in 2003 showed that the programs reduced bullying behavior by 30% among students using the middle school program, and reduced bullying behavior by 40% among students using the high school program.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) also recognizes the Success in Stages middle school and high school programs as being evidence based. The OJJDP recognition confirms that these innovative and easy-to-use computer-based programs can help schools significantly reduce bullying behaviors. Since these programs are listed by these federal agencies, schools and communities can use federal dollars to fund their implementation.

Success in Stages programs provide a unique solution to schools looking to implement an effective bullying-prevention program. The programs use an expert computer system to provide prevention and intervention instruction that is tailored to each unique student.

Like a one-on-one consultation with an expert, the Success in Stages program gets to know each student, asking about his or her attitudes, behaviors, and experiences, and then delivers prevention messages based on that student's answers through an engaging, multimedia interface. There are thousands of possible paths built in, so the program can respond to the needs of any individual student. Students complete the program in three 30-minute sessions that can be fit into existing schedules.

Success in Stages programs are based on the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM) and the Stages of Change -- the same science that's at the heart of successful smoking-cessation and other programs that lead people to behave in healthier ways. The Transtheoretical Model is based on principles developed from over 25 years of scientific research and scores of empirical studies, and is the result of research funded by over $70 million worth of grants and conducted with over 100,000 research participants.

"We are so excited about being able to deliver this type of one-on-one guidance to students," says Dr. James O. Prochaska, one of the developers of the Success in Stages programs. "This is truly a breakthrough. When we were implementing TTM counseling in the seventies, we never thought we would see the day when so many people could have access. Technology gives us the opportunity to work with young people in a way we never thought possible."

The Success in Stages programs were developed by the Channing Bete Company, a publisher known for bringing clear, easy-to-understand educational materials to a wide range of audiences for the last 50 years, in partnership with Pro-Change Behavior Systems and its founder, Dr. James O. Prochaska, world-renowned behavior-change expert and one of the developers of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change and the Stages of Change.
